1. What students never have to do
Students never create an account, never give an email address and never install anything. They open a link, enter a code or scan a QR code, and answer. A teacher can turn on nicknames; a student can then type any name they like, and does not have to use their real one.
2. What we collect from a student
- Their answers to the teacher's questions.
- A nickname, only if the teacher turns nicknames on.
- A random token in the pollslive_voter cookie, which stops the same browser from voting twice. It does not contain a name and lasts up to 12 months.
- Technical security logs, which can include an IP address, kept for up to 12 months and used only to stop abuse.
Nothing else: no location, no contacts, no camera or microphone, no class rosters and no student records from a learning management system.
3. What we never do
- We never show advertising in PollsLive, and our purchase-attribution pixel never runs on the pages where students join and answer.
- We never build profiles of students, track them across sites, or sell or share their data for anyone else's purposes.
- We never use student answers to train AI models.
- We do not use design tricks to make students share more or stay longer than the lesson needs.
Open-text answers are sent to an AI provider only if the teacher chooses to run an AI response digest on a poll, as explained on our AI page.
4. Who is responsible
The school, or the teacher acting on their own account, decides what to ask and how long to keep the results. Under the GDPR they are the controller, and A Plus Apps processes the answers for them as processor under our Data Processing Agreement, which applies to every workspace automatically. Where the law requires parental consent, for example under Article 8 GDPR, the school is responsible for getting it. If your school works with the Dutch Privacyconvenant Onderwijs model processing agreement, contact us at legal@pollslive.com.
5. How long answers are kept
Answers are kept until the teacher deletes the poll or closes the workspace. Deletion takes effect in the application at once, and backup copies are rotated out within 35 days. On request we delete all data of a school's workspace.
6. Where data is stored
Our application and database are hosted in the EU. Some service providers, such as our network and security provider, process data in the United States under the safeguards described in our Privacy Policy. Every provider is listed on our Sub-processors page. Schools can switch on EU-only AI processing in Studio settings, so that AI features never send their data outside the EU.
7. Schools in the United States
A school can use PollsLive under its own authority, with us acting as a school official with a legitimate educational interest under FERPA. Under COPPA, a school may consent on parents' behalf to the limited collection described above for an educational purpose. We use that information only for the school's purposes, never for commercial purposes, and delete it when the school asks.
8. Schools in the United Kingdom
We follow the principles of the ICO Age Appropriate Design Code in how the student side works: high privacy by default, only the data the activity needs, no profiling, no nudges and no location data.
9. For parents
If your child answered a poll in class and you have a question, please ask the school first, because it decides what was asked and what happens to the answers. You can also write to legal@pollslive.com and we will help the school respond.
