Quiz Buzzer Race: First to Buzz Gets to Answer
Turn any quiz question into a buzzer round. Phones become buzzers, the fastest person answers, and a wrong answer opens the buzzers to everyone else.
A normal quiz question lets everyone answer at once. A buzzer round is different: everyone reads the question, then races. Whoever buzzes first gets the turn, and only they answer. Get it wrong and the buzzers open again for everyone else. In PollsLive, any quiz question can run this way, with the audience's own phones as buzzers.
Turn it on
Switch on Buzzer race
Open a quiz question in the editor, open its options and turn on Buzzer race. Set the seconds to answer after buzzing, from 5 to 60 (10 if you leave it). The speed bonus and the answer deadline step aside on a buzzer question, because the race is the speed part.
Scoring is simple: full points for a right answer, and half the points lost for a wrong one. There is no speed bonus. Buzzer race runs when you present at your own pace, moving the slides yourself.
Run the round
Everyone reads, then buzzes
Each phone shows the question and the answers to read, and a large button that says Get ready until the buzzers open, then Buzz. On a laptop, Space or Enter buzzes too. A press that comes too early, or does not reach the room, says so, and the next press still works.
The big screen names who has the turn
The first buzz to reach the room wins the turn, timed by one clock for everyone, not by each phone. Your screen shows who is answering, the runners-up and how far behind they were, to the hundredth of a second. Everyone else's phone tells them how close they came.
Only the winner answers
The person who buzzed first sees Your turn. Answer now and the answers to pick from, with a countdown. Answers already tried and wrong are struck out. If they answer wrong, or their time runs out, the buzzers reopen for everyone who has not had a turn yet.
Reveal and move on
A right answer closes the round and the screen says who got it and the points they earned. If nobody gets it, Reveal answer shows the right one. Skip turn moves past someone who has gone quiet. The leaderboard counts buzzer points with the rest of the quiz.
Tips for a good buzzer round
- Mix it in. One or two buzzer questions in a longer quiz feel like a final round; ten in a row tire people out.
- Choose questions with one clear answer. A buzzer round rewards quick recall, not careful reading.
- Keep the answer time short for a lively room, and longer for a classroom or a second language.
- Say the rule out loud before the first one: wrong answers cost points.
