How to energize a sales kickoff (not just talk at the team)
An SKO that's all slides and quotas loses the room by mid-morning. Here's how sales leaders use live quizzes, leaderboards, and polls to make kickoff competitive, memorable, and actually about selling.
A sales leader we spoke to described last year's kickoff: a morning of strategy slides, a comp-plan walkthrough, and a room of reps quietly working their pipeline under the table. Salespeople are competitive by design - so the next SKO leaned into that instead of fighting it. The leaderboard did more for attention than any slide ever had.
Tip
You do not need to be technical to follow this guide. Every step uses plain buttons in PollsLive - no coding, no app install for your audience.
Competition is your engagement engine
A timed quiz with a leaderboard turns product training, objection handling, or the new comp plan into a game reps actually want to win. Add a speed bonus and the room leans in. The names at the top of the board will be talked about at lunch - which means the content got remembered.
A kickoff that participates
- Product knowledge quiz after each new-feature segment - instant proof of what stuck, and a leaderboard to chase.
- Objection-handling poll: put a tough prospect line on screen, vote on the best response, then discuss. Reps learn from each other, not just the deck.
- Live goal-commitment poll to close: "What's your number-one focus this quarter?" Captured, and revisited at the next QBR.
- Anonymous Q&A on the comp plan - the questions reps won't ask in front of their manager get answered.
The leaderboard moment
At Reesa's last SKO, the product-knowledge quiz after the new-feature segment did more for retention than the slide ever had. The speed bonus had reps leaning in, and the wrong-answer split told her exactly which feature needed re-explaining before they hit the floor:
Which plan does the new usage-based pricing apply to?
Then the objection-handling poll: a real prospect line on screen, reps vote on the best response, then a 90-second debate where they learn from each other instead of the deck:
"You're too expensive compared to [competitor]." Best first move?
"The names at the top of that leaderboard got talked about at lunch," Reesa said. "Which means the content got remembered - that's the whole game."
In-person, remote, or both
Whether the team's in a hotel ballroom or dialing in, everyone joins the same live game by QR or PIN - no app, no login. The leaderboard is shared on the main screen, so remote reps compete head-to-head with the room.
You can't lecture a sales team into engagement. But put a leaderboard up and you won't be able to stop them.

Tip
Run a quick quiz on product facts before the CEO speaks - it primes the room to pay attention.
